Scottish Milk and Healthy Snack Scheme: childcare providers

The Scottish Milk and Healthy Snack Scheme (SMHSS) replaced UK Nursery Milk Scheme in Scotland in August 2021.

Local authorities receive grants to fund the scheme.

Daily provisions

Local authorities must ensure that registered childcare providers have suitable arrangements for the daily provision of:

  • 189mls (1/3 pint) of plain fresh cow's milk (whole milk for children 1 year and over or to include semi-skimmed milk for children 2 years and over), or 189mls first infant formula for children under 12 months;

or

  • where children cannot consume cow's milk for medical, ethical or religious reasons plain, fresh, goat or sheep milk;

or

  • for those children who cannot consume cow's milk, goat's milk or sheep milk for medical, ethical or religious reasons, the provision of 189mls of a specified non-dairy alternative defined as unsweetened, liquid, and calcium enriched;

and

  • for children over six months old, a healthy snack item (a serving of fruit or vegetables) in addition to the milk or specified alternative.

How to register

If you are:

  • a registered childcare provider in Angus and

  • wish to receive funding for the scheme

email ELC@angus.gov.uk to request a registration form.

Receiving funding

After registration you'll submit a simple claim form every four weeks in advance. This projects how many portions of milk and healthy snacks you are going to need.

We will ask for your bank details at registration and use this information to make payments.

Supplying milk and healthy snacks

It is up to you to make arrangements for the supply of milk and healthy snacks. We'd encourage you to buy local if you can.

Receipts and invoices

You do not need to submit receipts with your four-weekly claims.

However, from time to time we may ask you for evidence of items purchased. This is to comply with national reporting or audit requirements.

You should therefore keep copies of receipts or invoices.
