Family and local history library resources

Our family history resources include records for births, deaths and marriages, census records, historic maps and old Angus newspapers on microfilm.

We sell Scotland's People vouchers at a discounted price. We provide free access to in our libraries.

Our local history collections include a wide range of titles of Angus interest.

All libraries hold collections of books and ephemera for their local area. In Forfar Library there is a significant Scottish collection in the John C Ewing library. Kirriemuir Library holds a special collection on JM Barrie and his work.

Most family and local history material is listed in our online library catalogue.

Our team are available to speak to local groups on a variety of topics of local history interest.  A charge may apply.  Please contact our Local History and Heritage Officer for more information.

Old Parish Registers (OPR)

Each library holds the OPR for its immediate area.

An Angus wide collection of OPR microfilms is held at Angus Archives.

International Genealogical Index (IGI)

The IGI for Scotland is available on microfiche in all libraries.


Forfar Library holds a large collection of maps including a complete six inch Angus set for 1865 and nearly complete sets for 1902 and 1927.

Other libraries have small collections of maps that may include old town plans and some historic Ordnance Survey maps for the local area.
