The Notice of Election for the European Parliamentary Election Thursday 23 May 2019 has now been published.

Elections to the European Parliament will be taking place in the UK on Thursday 23 May 2019.

Elections to the European Parliament are held every five years.  Between 23 May and 26 May this year voters in the 28 member states of the European Union will go to the polls to elect 751 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs). Voters in the UK will vote on 23 May to elect 73 MEPs. Results from all 28 states will be announced on the evening of Sunday 26 May.

The number of seats allocated among member states varies according to each country’s population. The UK is represented by a total of 73 MEPs allocated across 12 electoral regions. The Scotland Region is represented by 6 MEPs.

The Returning Officer for the Scotland Region known as the Regional Returning Officer is responsible for the overall conduct of the election of MEPs in this electoral region. A Local Returning Officer is appointed for each local counting area (i.e. for each local authority area) and is responsible for the administration of the election in their local counting area. The Chief Executive of Angus Council is the Local Returning Officer for Angus.

The Regional Returning Officer is responsible for all aspects of the nomination process at a European Parliamentary Election. If you require further information on the nomination process for this election please contact the Regional Returning Officer elections@edinburgh.gov.uk.

In the European Parliament Election, you have one vote to elect MEPs. Registered political parties put forward a list of candidates known as the “party list” and you can vote for one of these parties or for an individual candidate. The number of MEPs elected from a “party list” depends on their overall share of the total votes cast. Full details of the party lists and individual candidates for this election will be available after close of nominations on Thursday 25 April 2019.

The counting of the votes cast for the European Parliamentary Election will take place on the evening of Sunday 26 May 2019. The Regional Returning Officer for the Scotland region will announce the results as soon as all Local Returning Officers in the region have completed their counts and the votes have been collated.
