Holiday free school meal payment

A free school meal direct payment will be made to cover the Spring holiday period for:

  • P1-3 children in receipt of a school clothing grant
  • P4-S6 children and young people in receipt of free school meals

The payment will be £22 per child and is expected to be in bank accounts on or around Friday 2 April 2021.

£100 Spring Hardship Payment for P1-S6

The Scottish Government has also announced a further £100 Spring Hardship Payment to be made to eligible children. Eligible families will receive this £100 payment per child for:

  • P1-3 children in receipt of school clothing grant
  • P4-S6 children and young people in receipt of free school meals

Payments will be made automatically and are expected to be in bank accounts on or around Wednesday 31 March 2021.

If your child/ren are not currently in receipt of free school meals/school clothing grant but you think they may be eligible please check if they are eligible and complete an application form

Successful applications received and processed by Friday 26 March 2021 will receive the payment  of £100 for each P1 – S6 child in the household on or around Wednesday 31 March 2021.

Successful applications received between Monday 29 March and Friday 02 April 2021 will receive a backdated £100 payment for each P1 – S6 child in the household. The backdated payment will be made by the end of April 2021.

Early learning and childcare

The £100 payment is also available to eligible children accessing funded early learning and childcare (ELC) at either a local authority setting or a partner provider.

Payments will be made automatically on Wednesday 31 March 2021 to:

  • households with an older sibling who is already receiving a free school meal direct payment
  • households in receipt of Council Tax Reduction

We do not hold bank details for a small number of families. We will be contacting affected households directly about this.

If you are in receipt of any of the following benefits, your child is also eligible for this payment:

  • income Support
  • income-based Job Seeker's Allowance
  • income-related Employment Support Allowance
  • Child Tax Credit and where your income is less than £16,385
  • support provided under the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • universal credit where the monthly earned income does not exceed £610
  • Your child is also entitled to free school lunches if you receive both maximum Child Tax Credit and maximum Working Tax Credit and your income is under £7330

We do not hold the required details to make the payment automatically, please you complete this form to receive payment.

You do not need to complete the form if you already have an older child eligible for free school meals/school clothing grant or if you receive council tax reduction. You will need to provide evidence of receipt of benefits and we will verify your details against the records we hold.

Forms received by 9am on Monday 29 March 2021 will receive the payment  of £100 for each ELC child in the household on or around Wednesday 31 March 2021. Forms received between 9am on Monday 29 March and Friday 2 April 2021 will receive a backdated £100 payment by the end of April 2021. Forms received after Friday 2 April 2021 will not be processed.
