Resettlement: how we provide safety and refuge

The Resettlement Team work with all new arrivals to Angus via approved UK Resettlement Schemes, mainly families and individuals from Ukraine, Afghanistan and Syria.

Refugees and displaced families receive a warm Scots welcome from staff and communities in Angus.

Upon arrival, we undertake an initial, full resettlement assessment and, thereafter, provide wrap around support to ensure they have access to safe and secure housing; health services; education; employment and training and, key to successful integration, opportunities to integrate from day one.

The team provides a range of English language support for speakers of other languages, including formal SQA-accredited classes up to Level 4 and informal community language sessions. In collaboration with Dundee and Angus College, additional support is available for learners at SQA Level 5 and above.

There are a wide range of community integration projects across Angus, such as the International Speaking Café in Arbroath and the Montrose Speaking Club.

The first Angus New Scots Refugee Integration Strategy was approved at the Communities Committee on 1 April 2025.
