Information

Welcome to the start of the exciting process of delivering a brand new high school in Monifieth.

This page summarises the information that you need to make some informed choices about the new school. You will find much more detailed information on our Monifieth Learning Campus pages.

We want to speak to everybody who will be in some way involved with the new school including young people, staff, parents/carers, and the wider community.

We want to hear your ideas for the new building so that we can build the best possible school we can within the available funding.

This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity. By working together we can create the best possible outcome for learning and the community in Monifieth.

It is really important to hear from people who will use the building once completed and from the community which it serves.

Please take the time to read the available information and then use the questionnaire (this consultation is now closed) to give your feedback and ideas.

Monifieth High School 2021

The building

Monifieth High School was opened in 1979 and designed for 1060 young people.

There have been a number of extensions since then, including a new office and staff/visitor entrance, drama studios and facilities for young people with Additional Support Needs.

The school roll

The school is a high-performing and popular school. The population within the school’s catchment area has also increased significantly and the school receives many placing requests.

For more information on the school building and roll visit the Monifieth Learning Campus page.

The proposal

In October 2020, a bid for funding to replace Monifieth High School was made as part of the Scottish Government’s Learning Estate Investment Programme. Angus Council heard in December 2020 that funding for the project was approved. The funding from Scottish Government relates to approximately 50% of the project cost with Angus Council responsible for the remainder.

We see our schools as anchor assets of our community. Our planned new build Monifieth Learning Campus will offer an enhanced learning and teaching experience for approximately 1200 young people with increased community access.

Opportunities

The council has identified funding to build a new school. This is a significant investment with which we can achieve an amazing school, but not a blank cheque to provide everything.

Building on the Monifieth Town Centre charrette in 2016, we are looking at ways to work with existing community assets to unlock greater opportunities, rather than duplicating them.

Monifieth Library is operated by ANGUSalive. The library opened in its current location in Monifieth High Street in 1982. The proposed development of Monifieth Learning Campus presents an opportunity for shared library infrastructure and enhanced library service.  A relocation of the library service within a new Monifieth Learning Campus has the potential to strengthen the links between the school and community libraries, by focusing resources to reach a wider demographic of the public.

Angus Council does not have any dedicated community sport and leisure facilities within the burgh of Monifieth. Community groups/clubs can book the existing school facilities in Monifieth High School. As there are no existing dedicated community sport and leisure facilities to replace, there are no current or additional revenue budgets available to expand this provision within a new facility.  However, opportunities still exist for potential future use or access of the new school facilities by community groups/clubs.  The provision and future use of sports facilities requires to be carefully considered to maximise use of the available budget.

We are looking at creative ways to maximise the Learning Campus, and this could include additional early learning and childcare facilities which may be operated by Angus Council or a private operator.

Monifieth High School currently accommodates a number of activities after school hours. As part of the design of Monifieth Learning Campus it is key to increase opportunities for community use within the new development.

There are many opportunities, more details are available on the Monifieth Learning Campus page – we want to hear your thoughts.

Timescales

The target opening of the new Monifieth Learning Campus will be Summer 2025. The plan, as with other schools, is to build the new building on the existing playing fields, allowing the current building to be used during construction.
