Drumachlie Loan accessibility improvements

Road closure

There will be a road closure on Drumachlie Loan on the area just north of the railway bridge from Tuesday 5 December until into the new year. The road closure will be removed over the holiday break from 23 December until 8 January.

Measures have been put in place for the bin collections of those affected and temporary bus stops will be provided on Montrose Street and Park Road.

We apologies for the inconvenience this will cause and will aim to conclude the works in that area as quickly as possible.

We've been working with the community on a solution to a "missing link" for people walking, cycling and wheeling on the eastern edge of Brechin.

The missing link lies between the north of Drumachlie Loan and the nature trail along the former Montrose-Brechin-Forfar railway line.

Background

In 2020-21, the City of Brechin Community Council (CBCC) received funding for a consultation on key issues and desired improvements to the town.

The funding came from Transport Scotland's Cycling, Walking and Safer Routes (CWSR) programme.

Following the consultation, CBCC submitted a report to Angus Council.

The report asked the council to consider suggested improvements to the town.

One of those suggestions was to install a new footpath at the top of Drumachlie Loan, to address concerns about pedestrian safety and the and lack of facilities for wheeling and disabled users.

There are other issues around Drumachlie Loan. The path becomes very constrained and unusable for many users where the road passes under a narrow bridge of the Brechin-Montrose Heritage railway line.

Children travelling to the nearby Andover Primary School are among those affected.

In the summer of 2020 Angus Council officers met with CBCC representatives. They agreed that Angus Council would source funding to:

  • carry out a feasibility study to investigate route options
  • identify a preferred route
  • formalise a detailed design with associated estimated costs

The feasibility study was carried out in 2022.

Update: February 2024

‘The ‘long ramp’ has been realigned. This was due to more severe clashes with public utilities than previously envisaged.

This realignment benefits residents of Drumachlie Loan. Parking and exiting from parked cars will become much easier as you will be able to exit out onto the new footway.

The realigned footway, which will greatly benefit pedestrians and residents of Drumachlie Loan, is much longer than the original design. It is thus taking longer to complete.

New trees will be planted to replace the trees removed during construction.
