Historic Environment Scotland designates nationally important Gardens and Designed Landscapes (GDL). The most common designation is the estate landscape - green spaces providing the setting for large country houses which were consciously laid out for artistic effect. Their design often includes a combination of planting, land-forming, built structures, and water features.
Such landscapes can contain listed buildings and scheduled monuments or other archaeological interest, and some elements may also have natural heritage protection under Scottish Natural Heritage.
Angus Council as planning authority is required to take account of gardens and designed Landscapes when preparing local development plans and making decisions on planning applications which might affect the integrity of the overall area.
