Angus Council’s improvements to the National Cycle Network Route 1 (NCN1) have won the Excellence in Walking, Public Realm and Cycling award at this year’s Scottish Transport Awards.
In what was an incredibly competitive category, others on the shortlist included City of Edinburgh Council, Glasgow City Council and South Lanarkshire Council. Projects from Ancrum Outdoor Centre, Cyclehoop and Glasgow City Council and Cycling Scotland and Link Group were also vying for the award.
In addition to winning this category, the NCN1 project between Barry and Carnoustie was also highlighted in the Excellence in Transport Design, Excellence in Technology and Innovation and Most Effective Road Safety, Traffic Management & Enforcement categories.
The project was delivered in partnership between Angus Council, Sustrans, Carnoustie Golf Links Management and Tayside Contracts with the new improvements significantly enhancing the safety for all while promoting a more sustainable way of travel.
In a UK first, Clearview Connex Active Lidar technology has been implemented at Barry Burn to keep pedestrian and cyclist flow moving over the bridge and giving priority to non-motorised traffic over the crossing.
