The River South Esk catchment is of great value to local communities, businesses, and tourism providers. It provides drinking water, irrigation for crops and watering for livestock. It also supports many valuable wildlife habitats, and is the basis for tourism, recreation and angling.
Issues such as climate change, erosion, flooding, drought, pollution and disconnected habitats can reduce the health of the river and the wider catchment area.
The management plan
Previously, the River South Esk Catchment Partnership has managed projects to improve the health of the catchment, and shape community and economic activity, by implementing the first River South Esk Catchment Management Plan.
The partnership is producing a second management plan for 2026 to 2036.
