Commercial waste at recycling centres

Commercial waste and your duty of care

Commercial waste is any waste that comes from commercial activity.

If you use part of your home to run a business, the waste from that part is commercial waste.

If someone is paid to dispose of household waste, it's classed as commercial waste.

Commercial waste also includes any waste from construction, demolition, industry or agriculture.

Duty of care

Commercial traders have a duty of care regarding the disposal of their waste.

As a commercial trader, you are responsible for offloading your waste (including bulky or heavy items) and ensuring it goes in the right container.
