Music in schools

Terms and conditions, and application form

How to apply

Access to music lessons is dependent on completion of the online application and a selection process from the instrumental instructor.

When to apply

Not all instruments are available to all ages. Wait until your child is at the age/stage where tuition on your chosen instrument is available. You can't apply for lessons in advance.

Instrument choice

You can only apply for lessons on an instrument that is available at your child’s school.

Waiting lists

If your application cannot be processed, your child’s name will go on a waiting list. They'll start getting lessons if and when a space becomes available.

The waiting list for music lessons is reset over the summer holiday. If your child’s name is on the waiting list and you wish to reapply for the same instrument, you will need to reapply in August.

Remember, if your child does not receive their first choice of instrument, other instruments will become available as they move up through the school.

We encourage pupils to remain with their first choice of instrument, and discourage ‘instrument hopping’. But sometimes a child may need to change instrument. In such cases, we'll ask you to stop lessons on the existing instrument and reapply for lessons on the new instrument.

We won't process applications with outstanding balances from previous years until the outstanding balance has been cleared.

Private lessons/music schools

Children attending private lessons, music schools or the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland are not eligible for instrumental lessons at school on the same instrument.
